Book Launch Invitation: “Why Latin America Matters”, November 12, 16h00 CET

09 November 2021

The Coimbra Group Latin America Working Group together with the Centre for Contemporary Latin American Studies (CCLAS) of the University of Edinburgh warmly invite you to the virtual book launch celebrating the publication “Why Latin America Matters”.

This collection of essays aims to make the case for the importance of Latin America as a crucial region in global politics and development. The book is structured around six wide-ranging themes which are explored from different disciplinary perspectives, drawing particularly on transdisciplinary work: Culture and Identity; Environment and Sustainability; Governance and Democratisation; Health; Migration and Human Rights; and Urban Resilience.

The virtual book launch on Friday 12 November, 16h00 – 18h00 CET, will be opened by Ludovic Thilly, Chair of the Executive Board of the Coimbra Group which has a long history of collaborating with Latin America.

The event includes presentations by several contributors of the book, from both the European and Latin American continents. Ana Lúcia Gazzola who authored the book’s foreword and Álvaro Maglia, Executive Secretary of the Association of Universities of the Montevideo Group (AUGM), will also share their personal perspectives on the question “Why Latin America matters”.

The book launch will conclude with a general discussion about Europe-Latin American issues, including a Q&A session with the audience, to be moderated by Soledad Garcia Ferrari, Dean of Latin America and Director of the Centre for Latin American Studies at the University of Edinburgh.

This event is open and free of charge to all researchers, policy-makers, representatives of think-tanks, civil society and international organisations interested in taking a fresh look at Latin America in a global context.

Registration is compulsory to receive the login information.
