Next Life Sciences Working Group Virtual Conference: “Hide and Seek: Host Evasion of Protozoan Parasites” on 20 January 2023

18 January 2023

The next Coimbra Group Life Sciences virtual conference this academic year will take place on 20 January 2023 under the title “Hide and Seek: Host Evasion of Protozoan Parasites.” Christian J. Janzen, a Professor at the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the Julius-Maximilians-University in Würzburg, will introduce the audience to protozoan pathogens that responsible for devastating diseases affecting millions of people all over the world and strategies these pathogens developed to survive in their vertebrate hosts.

Participation is free of charge and open to all interested parties. In order to register, please proceed to the registration form here.

Conference abstract:

Protozoan pathogens such as Trypanosoma, Leishmania, Plasmodium and Toxoplasma are responsible for devastating diseases, which affects millions of people all over the world. The key to their success is the ability to use sophisticated strategies to evade the defense systems of their vertebrate hosts. These strategies include altering their surface protein composition to become invisible for immune cells, invading host cells to hide from the immune system, modulating the host immune response and even directly changing host cell transcription profiles. In this seminar, I would like to present some protozoan pathogens, the diseases they cause and the fascinating strategies they developed to survive in their vertebrate hosts.

About the speaker:

Christian J. Janzen is a molecular parasitologist whose main interest lies in chromatin-associated mechanisms during infection and development of protozoan parasites. He studied biology at the RWTH Aachen in Germany but moved to the University of Freiburg to receive his PhD in Virology in 2001. During his postdoctoral term at the Rockefeller University in New York City he started to work on chromatin structure in African trypanosomes in the group of George Cross. In 2006, he became an independent group leader at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) in Munich, Germany. In 2011, Christian J. Janzen was appointed professor at the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the Julius-Maximilians-University in Wuerzburg, Germany.
